Vitamins For Stress: How To Stay Strong During This Period

January 25th, 2010

It is important to take care of your body even when you are undergoing a period of stress. Through diet, you can make sure that you have an adequate supply of nutrients and vitamins for stress because there are certain things that the body needs in order to cope.

Excessive stress can cause you to feel overwhelmed. You begin to feel the effects of poor health when you do not eat or sleep properly due to stress and your immune system becomes low. You may also experience frequent headaches, constipation and panic attacks if you find that you just cannot cope with the situation.

It is inevitable that stress comes with modern living. You may feel stressed in the office or at home dealing with your family members. Or you may feel stress if you feel that you are falling short of your desires for more wealth and success. It is therefore important that you learn to cope with stress and view obstacles positively.

Nutrients and vitamins for stress include:

1. Vitamin C. You may be surprised to hear that the best place to get Vitamin C from is potatoes. Natural remedies that are rich in Vitamin C include the skins of baked potatoes, raw green cabbage, cantaloupe, strawberries and citrus fruits such as oranges.

2. Calcium. This mineral helps to regulate the rhythm of your heart, contractions of your muscles and nerve impulse transmission. Whenever your body needs to work hard to fight stress, it will lose more calcium than usual. Good sources of calcium can be found in dairy products, tou fu, almonds and broccoli.

3. Magnesium. Besides helping you to manage your stress level, it can also keep you from getting muscle spasms. Some of the best sources of magnesium are found in green vegetables such as spinach, nuts like almonds, as well as seeds.

4. Omega-3 fatty acids. These not only help you manage your stress but they also reduce your risk of developing coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease if not managed well can lead to death. Natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids can be found in salmon, tuna, flaxseed oil herring, mackerel, and walnuts. Since canned tuna does contain some levels of mercury, you may wish to substitute this instead with other sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

If you find that you are not able to eat well through a regular during this period, consider taking the above in the form of vitamin supplements. While it is better to obtain these vitamins from natural sources, not even having them is worse. Also, do ensure that you choose good quality supplements. You want to give your body the proper nourishment as you deal with the pressures at hand!

Why children with ADHD climb roofs and how to support this with natural remedies

January 14th, 2010

A behaviour that is very common to many children with ADHD is a sense of fearlessness. I recall my first experience of a pupil running on to the 4th storey roof of a pupil referral unit I once worked at. Heart in mouth, I watched as he scaled window sills and roofs to perch himself on the top of the roof. I discovered in a very short time that many children presenting with this condition follow similar patterns of behaviour and very often run to the highest places and spaces.

Another familiar scenario is leaping out of bedroom windows to the ground below, without any consideration of consequences, running off and dashing across the road without looking and the list of fearless behaviours grows.

As I can vouch, this often leaves onlookers in a state of disbelief and anxiousness regarding their safety.

Why do these children exhibiting ADHD behavior do this? Well the whole concept of fear and not learning through previous experiences is very interesting. Fear is a lower brain emotion and as these incredible young people appear to have their brain wiring routed in other pathways, these normal fear reactions do not even equate in the level of choices they make.

There is of course the thrill factor which is coupled with the satisfaction of them often being unable to be reached. The entertainment values of watching those around them stand with heart in mouth as I did and a sense of them being in control. They are also in the position of higher ‘authority’ when in this position.

Of course, it also represents an opportunity to escape the situation and isolate them from what is going on and is a behaviour which is often triggered by a stress situation. It is however worrying and perplexing for those who can only stand and watch.

So how can such ADHD behaviours be addressed in a natural way?

I would personally start with the Bach Flower remedies to support the emotional state.

Chestnut bud works with failure to learn from previous experience, combined with Rescue Remedy to deal with the stress that it is prompting the fight or flight reaction, Cherry Plum for losing control, vine for defiance and control and impatiens for impulsive behaviour and crab apple for compulsive or obsessive behaviours.

These remedies are safe and simple with no side effects have an emotionally calming effect.

The Causes Of Workplace Stress And How Best To Prevent This Happening

January 2nd, 2010

The modern world is work focused and employment based. We spend the majority of our waking hours at the workplace and this has its own benefits and problems. One of the most common of these problems is workplace stress. This is a chronic ailment caused by conditions that negatively affect your performance and overall well-being. It can also affect an individuals’ psychological and physical health, as well as organization’s effectiveness. Workplace stress is affecting a whole spectrum of the population ranging from doctors to plumbers

Workplace stress is now recognized globally as a condition that can affect all categories of workers, in all types of jobs. Stress is a source of tension and frustration that may arise through a number of interrelated influences on behavior, including the individual, group, organizational and environmental factors. This usually leads to loss of concentration, sleeplessness, and it can also increase the risk for illness, back problems, accidents, and lost time. Workplace stress is now one of the most prevalent reasons for lost working days, which hinders the progress of the organization as well as the individual.

There are various reasons for workplace stress and one of them is management. This usually happens when managers behave in an authoritarian way, offer no constructive support or advice to the work force or deny promotional opportunities to the deserving members of the company. This is when employees become frustrated or cynical towards the organization. Another reason for workplace stress is overbearing or jealous work colleagues. Office gossip can be harmless fun if kept within reason but if it is constantly directed towards one particular person then it can be quite damaging and lead to a lot of workplace stress for the person concerned.

There are steps that organizations can take to prevent or minimize the effects of workplace stress, so that they have more contented and happier employees. Some of the ways to achieve this is to make sure that your workforce have a voice and are heard, they are aware of their importance to the organization and are seen as unique and exceptional. Some of the policies that can help towards this are to include flexi-time, working from home, stress coaching, on the job support, keeping jobs open during sick leave, provision of quiet rooms, exercise provision, training initiatives and social activities.

Workplace stress can also be caused because of the work place atmosphere, for instance noisy, dirty, messy areas can all contribute towards job stress. It is therefore a good idea to keep the work areas clean and tidy to have a healthy, relaxed and stress free working environment.

Employees can also contribute towards minimizing and preventing workplace stress. Worker s should refrain from harassment or bullying. They should not tease, insult or even threaten others due to their sex, religion or race. Under no circumstances should they spread malicious gossip in order to destroy another’s good name.

By working together, employees and management can minimize and prevent a lot of workplace stress. Organizations should always be looking for ways that lead to a workforce that is happy, healthy and therefore more productive.
